Something to hold onto: A portable barre, chair, etc.
An Open Area to dance: A minimum 6 foot by 6 foot open area. We'll be doing barre work plus stationary center work.
An internet-capable device (phone, laptop, tablet) with a camera and microphone. The device needs to be far enough away and at waist height to get a full body view of you.
Wear something appropriate for the lesson. If you look the part, you'll feel the part. Make sure it’s a contrasting color, so I can easily see you (Ex: If you’re in a dark room with black flooring, don’t wear black leotard and black tights!).
LIGHTING: Get the lights in front of you rather than having a light source from behind you. Don't have lights or a window behind you.
Make sure you won't be distracted and that there's no noise in the immediate area for you.

"Online" and "Virtual" Classes

There's nothing "virtual" about HSDA classes. Students are watched individually & are corrected;  they can ask questions and get answers. There is real-time interaction. It's just like being at the studio, albeit online. At the Hirschl School they are real classes.

Virtual implies something more like what my daughter does when she puts on her Occulus VR headset: "not real". For that kind of scene, there are plenty of YouTube dance class clips to entertain you. Yes, I hear that many dance studios just do a "follow-the-leader" kind of online thing, and don’t pay attention to or correct the students. If it works for them, that's fine.

Masks, temperature checks, cleaning, distancing and reduced group size. For the safety of our Patrons, we also make use of a high-output UVC light to disinfect the facility. It's the same kind of instrument that hospitals use to clean their operating rooms.

A Real Class, a Real Teacher, a Real Student

I'm sure you've taught your children well. They should respect their teachers, and listen & pay attention when they're in class & at school. So it shouldn’t matter if the teacher is in the same room, or on a screen device. There's still a direct dialog and relationship between teacher and student.

Especially due to recent developments in the world, it must be made absolutely clear that the relationship is still valid, in-person or online. A class- no matter what kind- is just as real either way. Knowing and abiding by this is an important and valuable asset nowadays.

To help this concept become clear and understood, it’s up to the parents to back it up. Having a student walk off screen and ignoring the teacher is quite a lose-lose situation. Having a student be clear on the subject and abide by it becomes a win-win and creates a positive learning environment.
